Lucasfilm using game engine to render movie scenes in real-time
Lucasfilm plans to utilize video game engines to render movie scenes in real-time, potentially eliminating the post-production process in film-making over the next decade.
Speaking at the Technology Strategy Board event at BAFTA in London recently, and as reported byThe Inquirer, Lucasfilm's CTO Kim Libreri explained that advances in video game graphics and engines means that real-time motion capture can now be used in conjunction with game engines for movies.
Libreri explained that the video game industry is "catching up quite quickly" to the movie industry when it comes to visuals, and that a convergence in traditional visual effect capabilities is inevitable.
Libreri showed off some of these capabilities using the ill-fated Star Wars 1313 as a demonstration, as shown in the above video.
"If you combine video games with film-making techniques, you can start to have these real deep, multi-user experiences," he explained. "Being able to animate, edit and compose live is going to change the way we work and it's really going to bring back the creative experience in digital effects."
