Activision letting kids create their own characters in Skylanders Imaginators

Activision says it wants to give kids a "blank canvas," and suggests its creation system will allow for millions of unique characters.

Just weeks after Disney binned its own toys-to-life effort, Disney Infinity , Activision has unveiled the next entry in its popular Skylanders series.

Christened, the new installment will shake things up by letting players create their own characters using an assortment of powers, abilities, names, appearances, and catchphrases.

Skylanders Imaginators will also introduce class-based gameplay, and will support all 300+ toys from previous games.

"No matter how in touch with our 'inner kids' we might think we are as adults, nothing comes close to the endless creativity that springs from the mind of an inspired kid," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.

"[So] we've turned this year's game into the ultimate blank canvas for kids' imaginations so they can create and play their own Skylanders.”

Activision has shifted over 250 million Skylanders toys since the series made its debut in 2011 with Skylanders Spyro's Adventure.
