Reach the Galaxy’s Highest Score in Cloudrift

Featuring visuals reminiscent of the Rainbow Road tracks from the Mario Kart games, Cloudrift by friendlyOctopus can’t seem to fit in any specific genre.

by friendlyOctopus can’t seem to fit in any specific genre. It comes off as a mix between racing games, platformers, infinite runners, and even a bit of survival, all blended together in an abstract world.

In premise, players have to control a ball and keep it balanced on a procedurally generated shifting cloud while collecting several power-ups and earning points by touching the colorful cloud. The player scores based on the colors their ball touches, those being the classic RGB. Depending on the items collected, the cloud can change colors and give players more points on a specific color, while other power-ups can also boost the general score or even add some elements to the game, like a small and safe castle in the middle of the cloud, where the ball will be safe. There is no goal to the single player beyond scoring as much as possible and getting to the top of the game’s leaderboard.

For multiplayer, though, the two players can compete with each other to see who can get the highest score on the stage and also reach the leaderboard. The other option is to play a Smash Bros -like versus mode in which players have to throw their enemies through holes in the cloud, or just very far away from it, giving them no chance to recover.

Cloudrift is currently campaigning for votes, hoping to be Greenlit by the Steam community. A release date is not set yet, although the game’s page says that release is “imminent.” When it launches, it will be for PC (no other platforms have been specified yet).
