Become a Punching Bag for Heroes in Mediocre Monster

Has anyone ever had the heart to consider how tough it must be for all the slimes, goblins, and skeletons who are killed regularly in games?

Has anyone ever had the heart to consider how tough it must be for all the slimes, goblins, and skeletons who are killed regularly in games? All these monsters have real (and tough) jobs, you know! Opal Squad is telling the story from behind the scenes in Mediocre Monster .

The Bestiary is the world leader in random monster outsourcing , and is the organization responsible for providing monster spawns for experience-hungry heroes. Gob is a typical, low-level goblin who starts on the bottom of the totem pole in the company. His first job entails going to the Tutorial Forest, where happy-go-lucky adventurers knock him out and gather loot. Gob grows stronger, but ultimately, his job stays the same — to work behind the scenes to create an accurate, believable encounter for heroes.mediocre

Encounters in Mediocre Monster play out in typical, turn-based JRPG fashion. There are several rules Gob must follow to do his job properly. Should a hero use a “taunt” ability, Gob must select them as his next attack target — attacking the wrong one reflects badly on his performance. That’s the basis of it, but further down the road, the rules to follow multiply. Gob has to drop the correct loot upon losing, react properly to elemental attacks and critical hits, and more. The better he performs, the higher his rank gets, awarding more gold, which is spent to improve various aspects of a town.

The game is currently participating in the Square Enix Collective, a sort of prologue to crowdfunding. The Collective asks for fan feedback and opinion, and should there be enough positive votes, the project goes on with a crowdfunding campaign with some aid from Square Enix.
