MontrealX Showcase – Papercade (Hololabs)
I was fortunate enough to be invited to the first ever MontrealX Indie Games Showcase in New York City last week, hosted by Rogue Counsel and held at the Quebec Government Office in Rockefeller Plaza.
and held at the Quebec Government Office in Rockefeller Plaza. The small venue displayed ten unique indie titles, either recently released or upcoming, and I took a look at everything the showcase had to offer. The first project I’m covering is Papercade , which the developers at Hololabs hope will inspire a new hobby that they term “scrapgaming”.
In short, Papercade is a social app that was designed to be simple enough for anyone to enjoy; Hololabs hopes to attract all creative types, regardless of their experience level with video games. It allows users to design, play, and share their own personalized adventures. Each adventure takes place within a 3D papercraft diorama, and users can create short 1-diorama adventures, or weave an epic story-driven adventure using multiple dioramas. This is done by importing photgraphs, or using ones already provided by the game, to customize characters, speech bubbles, scenery, and even music.
Being a social app, sharing is obviously a major component as well. Papercade allows players to take screen captures, make in-game walkthrough videos, or share their projects for others to download and experience. The game also allows users to create their own player profiles, so others can follow your profile and find out whenever a new diorama is posted. This also ties into the social feed feature, where anyone who downloads the app can view a customizable list of user-generated adventures tailored to their specific interests.
If scrapgaming sounds like something worth checking out, the game is available now on iOSfor free. To find out more information, or to get the latest project updates, you can follow Papercade on Twitterand Facebook. Or, for the old-school folks who “don’t do” social media – but are for whatever reason interested in a social app – there’s always the developer’s website.
