Some of our older readers may remember the “Game & Watch” products from Nintendo, way back in the 1980s. They looked like ordinary wristwatches, but you could also play simple video games on them. The hero of many of these, Mr. Game & Watch, made a return appearance in the Super Smash Bros. games in more recent years.
Now, an up and coming game studio is once again making video games a fashion statement.
Everywear Gamesis billing itself as “the world’s first wearable games studio.” With smartwatches becoming the latest trend in portable technology, their plan is “to perfect the wearable gaming experience and integrate it smoothly into everyone’s lives.” Beginning later this year, they will be debuting games which have been specifically designed for smartwatches.
The three co-founders – Markus Tuppurainen, Aki Järvilehto, and Mika Tammenkoski – are veterans of the industry. Tuppurainen hails from Rovio, where he was involved with powerful franchises such as Angry Birds. Järvilehto, previously the EVP of Remedy Entertainment, has held board, operative, and executive positions for various technology and games companies. Tammenkoski, who also cut his teeth at Remedy, has worked for companies such as Digital Chocolate. Between the three of them, they have more than thirty years’ worth of experience with game development and marketing.
“We see wearable tech as the most exciting new platform of 2015,” says Järvilehto, who is also the CEO of Everywear Games. “As developers, this year presents an unrivalled opportunity to craft completely original gaming experiences for a global audience.” Founded in 2014, Everywear is “the first significant player to enter the wearable games market, aiming to create fresh gaming experiences optimized for smartwatches and tailored to fit naturally with everyday life.”
Based in Helsinki, Finland, Everywear Games is looking to highlight what they call “Twitter-sized entertainment.” The games they plan to unveil will provide hours of enjoyment for years, but can be devoured in short gulps of time, under a minute. It’s ideal for the gamer on the go. To that end, they are on the hunt for like-minded visionaries to help them reach their goals. “We’re looking for people who are passionate about working with games; people who have shipped products on multiple platforms, have significant industry experience, and share our genuine excitement to be part of crafting the future of smartwatch gaming.” In particular, they are seeking game artists, programmers, and designers. Interested parties should look at their websiteand review the particulars of each position.
Further details regarding Everywear Games products will be announced later this year. Until then, gamers can sign up on the mailing list at the website, as well as watch the official Facebookand Twitter
