The Dragon Wins: ‘Fight the Dragon’ Takes Australian Honor
Developer 3 Sprockets describes their adventure game Fight the Dragon as “ Diablo meets Little Big Planet .” The user-generated hack-and-slash RPG allows players to enjoy short adventures, either alone or with friends.
.” The user-generated hack-and-slash RPG allows players to enjoy short adventures, either alone or with friends. These episodes are presented in a non-linear fashion and usually take ten to fifteen minutes to complete, allowing players to either get a quick fix of gaming or play multiple adventures when time permits.
The game is filled with the usual delights of adventure gaming – level grinding, loot scrounging, monster thwacking, and puzzle solving. Through the completion of the short adventures, players help their characters increase their stats in the hopes of becoming strong enough to defeat the titular dragon – a fearsome beast with a hefty one million hit points. Every time a player challenges the dragon, he or she has a chance to win prizes, plus do permanent damage to the dragon which will carry over from one fight to the next, meaning that the dragon’s HP can ultimately be whittled down to zero. Completing short adventures earns the player scrolls, which are exchanged for one-on-one confrontations with the dragon.
What makes Fight the Dragon particularly interesting is the way the developers have made all of their own tools available to the player. The Adventure Construction Kit, known as ACK, enables players to churn out tons of user-generated content. Each player will be able to design their own environments, NPC dialogue, enemy interactions, puzzles, and more. In fact, all of the short adventures which enable the player’s character to level up are created by other players. More than three thousand user-created adventures have been designed to date.
The devs are proud to announce that Fight the Dragon has earned the right to call itself an award-winning game for the second time. Earlier this year, it took one of the eight Best in Play awards at the 2014 Game Developers Conference. Last week, at Game Connect Asia Pacific’s Australian Game Developer Awards ceremony, Fight the Dragon was honored with the top prize in the Technical Excellence category. It was also a finalist in the Innovation category at the show, all of which is a testament to the unique vision of the crew at 3 Sprockets. The game was showcased at PAX Australia in the ANZ Indie Pavilion.
