At GDC 2016, Bungie's David Candland gave a talk on that design process, showcasing everything from item management to how players move from system to system. It's a fascinating breakdown of how a company like Bungie, who's been making high-quality first-person shooters for over a decade, approaches building a new interface system when adding more RPG elements.
