is a retro science-fantasy game developed by Freehold Games, and currently available through Steam’s Early Access as of July 15. The game uses basic graphics and a 2D map in order to travel from one place to another, and then incorporates text-based scenarios with multiple choices, based on the customized abilities of the character.
There’s a lot to talk about when it comes to Caves of Qud , to the point that a short news article likely doesn’t do it nearly as much justice as it deserves. The story starts thousands of years after the fall of civilization, leaving behind mysterious ruins and many technological wonders for the inhabitants of the current returning society to discover and explore. Each cave, dungeon, and local map is procedurally generated, though the main cities remain stationary through every playthrough, which helps since the game offers unforgiving dangers and permadeath.
Surviving more than five minutes within the game will require a deep understanding of the turn-based combat and skill-based RPG systems. Players will also need to scavenge and supply food, clothing, and water in order to survive away from civilization, and worse yet, said water is the only source of currency in this game. Thankfully, even with the high rate of death, players can make their own characters and choose from over 70 mutations to make diversify them, such as by giving a character two heads, four arms, wings, psychic powers, and more.
Caves of Qud is already available on Steam’s Early Accessfor Windows, Mac, and Linux desktops at a price of $9.99. The game aims to push players to their limits, and reward continued survival by revealing more of the plot, and the history of the world.
