Breaking Down Uncharted 4's Story Trailer
We've seen brief snippets of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End for over two years now, but Naughty Dog has kept the story close to its chest, revealing very little about Nathan Drake's current state of being or the expedition he's embarking on.
We've seen brief snippets of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End for over two years now, but Naughty Dog has kept the story close to its chest, revealing very little about Nathan Drake's current state of being or the expedition he's embarking on. We know he and his brother Sam are looking for Captain Henry Avery's treasure – the largest reported pirate treasure of all. Rival treasure hunters are in pursuit.
Today's two-minute story trailer gives us a wider look at the locations and characters in this chapter of Drake's life. While it once again doesn't offer much in terms of narrative clarity, it does reveal that we will see a lot of Nathan and Sam together, both in the present and the past.
We combed every second of the trailer for hints and secrets, and pinpointed a few things worth noting. If you see anything else we should discuss, let us know and we'll add it to the story.
The trailer begins with a flashback scene highlighting Nathan and Sam in their teenage years. Nathan looks a little older than he did in the flashback scene from Uncharted 3, but not by much – we're guessing a year or two. Nathan appears to be bruised.
The young brothers were in a metropolitan area. We hear Sam talk about them being destined for something great together, perhaps hinting at a story tie-in to the modern-day events.
Later in the trailer, we hear the modern-day Sam ask Nathan how long they've been chasing "this thing," likely referring to an artifact or treasure relating to Captain Henry Avery. The image shown is a flashback with the young Drakes in front of a mansion. We then see them in a darkened room looking at an old book.
A quick shot of Sam and Nathan in light winter gear with a rocky landscape behind them. Nathan is using a flashlight to illuminate what is likely a cave.
The boys are heavily armed and are venturing into what appears to be a fairly modern society long lost to the jungle. This would appear to be a location in Madagascar. Nathan and Sam were shipwrecked here.
A darkened tomb with a throne. Sam and Nathan are again in winter clothing. Icicles hang from the ceiling.
Another new location, perhaps further inland in Africa. The volcano in the distance hangs ominously over the brightly lit scene.
A shipwreck in a tropical underwater location. Leaked concept art showed Nathan navigating a sunken city as well. Looks like swimming will be used fairly often.
Nadine Ross and our first look at who we presume is Rafe Adler, another rival treasure hunter. He's dressed to the nines for a fancy event that we are led to believe Nathan and Sam also attend, given the attire we see them in throughout the trailer. The ice sculpture in the background likely hints at a historical figure of note.
We later see Rafe in his treasure-hunting attire, and it appears he's in Madagascar with his mercenary crew.
Nadine apparently enjoys threatening Nathan's life. We saw her do this in a different moment in the game in a previous trailer. She's looking for an "artifact."
Elena and Nathan in better days. In other trailers, there's friction between them.
The location of the fancy party, only after hours. It would appear Nathan and an opposing force are here to investigate or steal something.
Nathan holding a religious artifact. He's still in his dress attire. He later breaks the top off of the cross.
A harrowing platforming/escape scene with a giant, plummeting bell.
A beautiful stained-glass window with what appears to be water on the other side. Tie this in with the underwater city...could this be Atlantis?
