As you gain points, you can not only upgrade your own weapon attributes, but also apply upgrades to your guards, giving them extra oomph to be more effective in battle. Some will automatically attack the enemy, while others will require your orders to act. Figuring out which of these are more prudent to give upgrades to is part of the challenge.
