Say hello to the Unu, the latest Android-based microconsole
Developed by peripherals manufacturer Snakebyte, the Unu is designed as a touchscreen tablet with a docking port and remote keyboard, intended to be used as a portable media device which integrates with the family home entertainment center.
Introducing the Unu, yet another Android-based microconsolevying for a space beneath the family television this holiday season.
Developed by peripherals manufacturer Snakebyte, the Unu is designed as a touchscreen tablet with a docking port and remote keyboard, intended to be used as a portable media device which integrates with the family home entertainment center. Like many of the other microconsoles presently charging toward the market, it is built upon an Android framework and promises "virtually" full compatibility with any game from the Google Play store.
A "media edition," intended for video streaming and certain apps, will ship with tablet, dock and keyboard remote (an "airmouse") and will run consumers $200, while a "gaming edition" will run at $250 and come packed with a specialized gamepad. Both versions appear to have the same hardware specifications, with a 1.6 GHz quad core processor.
GameStop and Newegg are both expected to carry it, though each is currently listing the device for a different street date (October 29th versus November 8th, respectively).
For Android developers eager to see their Google Play games on more home screens, it's another prospective option. However, with the Unu venturing into an increasingly crowded market of Android-based home screen solutions, it remains to be seen how the device will fare against the competition.
