‘Mikey Shorts’ Conjures Pleasant Memories
Since the announcement of Cascadia’s GameDock, I’ve been all buzzed about the possibilities for the future of iOS gaming.

GameDock, I’ve been all buzzed about the possibilities for the future of iOS gaming. Specifically two button side scrollers such as Cavorite or Nihilumbra , how will titles like these work in the future? It also has be thinking of what titles will fill those trademark character roles that each console has, such as “the Master Chief of PS3.” Well, Rocketcat Games’ Mikey Shorts is certainly no gun-toting super soldier, but it certainly seems to be trying to fill the “Mario of iOS” position no matter how you look at it.

The game began life as the project of two friends, both named Mike, who met while competing for top scores in a platforming competition. With their competitive platforming background, it’s not too dificult to imagine where inspiration for the game came from. With the patrolling enemies and simple environments, the game looks like a low budget version of Super Mario World for the SNES. Controls are pretty simple, Mikey can either jump or slide to get around obstacles, collect coins, and stomp enemies. Progress is determined by the amount of statues the player is able to collect on each level, and unlike Super Mario World for the SNES, Mikey Shorts does not have multiplayer. What Mikey Shorts does have is plenty of terrain to explore in search of statues and coins for progression, as well as different skins for Mikey’s head, meaning there should be plenty for the obsessive gamer to pursue.

While no official date has been revealed for the release of Mikey Shorts , the game should be available on the App Store sometime later this summer for $0.99. The preview video above should give you plenty to digest while waiting for the game to finish the latter portion of its development, but until then, you can check the developer’s forum page here.
