CAIN Presents an Investigative Thriller using Unreal Engine 4

Investigative noir fiction sounds compelling, and perhaps even more so when it’s realized in first-person perspective using the powerful Unreal Engine 4.

Investigative noir fiction sounds compelling, and perhaps even more so when it’s realized in first-person perspective using the powerful Unreal Engine 4. With that in mind, the Spanish team at Gazpacho Games is developing CAIN , and just released a new video showing off its mechanics and look.

In CAIN , players take control of Jeff Joyce, a math specialist and investigator from Louisiana. Joyce wakes up in a strange room, alone, with no idea how he got there in the first place. There doesn’t appear to be any way out, and realizing he is trapped and held for an unknown reason, Joyce obsesses over figuring out this question and getting out.

Rendered in Unreal Engine 4 (with some extra layering of the developer’s own tools), CAIN has players interacting with elements in the room to find clues, like reading newspaper scraps. While it is a 3D title, it gives off the familiar feeling of an old-school point-and-click adventure; interacting with objects opens up a radial menu with a variety of actions such as “look,” “use,” and more depending on items currently held in the inventory. There’s also a mini-game in the form of interactive elements when using certain objects, such as picking locks.

Gazpacho Games has been working on on CAIN since approximately Fall of 2014, and intends to launch the game for PC. The studio opened up in 2013. The game’s splash page can be found at this address.

Check back with IGM in the future as we investigate more into CAIN ‘s development.
