VoidExpanse , the debut title from AtomicTorch Studio , released on Steam as of Thursday, April 2.
, released on Steam as of Thursday, April 2. An interstellar exploration game, VoidExpanse takes PC gamers into deep space in search of fame, fortune, and infinitely more.
The scifi action RPG takes place in a massive open-world universe, filled with procedurally-generated galaxies and star systems. Players will develop a character by selecting skills from a diverse skill tree, then explore the deepest parts of space to achieve a variety of goals. Along the way, they’ll engage hostile aliens in heated, fast-paced combat, mine precious ores from asteroids while dodging the attention of space pirates, and visit merchants and space stations to trade and complete quests.
Players will travel in a custom-designed ship, and VoidExpanse offers hundreds of options to tailor the ship to each player’s specific needs and style. Modules, devices, weapons and boosters will ready the ship for combat and exploration, and additional components can be discovered as the game progresses. Each ship will ultimately be as unique as the player who designs it.
In addition to fending off baddies and carving profitable trade routes, players will have the option of joining factions, each with their own people, territories, and agendas. To join a faction presents a new set of challenges, as they are not overly trusting of newcomers, requiring players to earn their welcome. Once installed as part of the faction, however, the player will have access to equipment, abilities, and opportunities not available anywhere else in the game, as well as separate narratives, which contribute to the game’s unique ending.
In terms of a narrative, VoidExpanse has a lengthy, intriguing storyline which is entirely non-linear. Joining a faction is just one example of how player choices and actions will significantly impact the route the story takes, with multiple endings encouraging replay. The game also includes a multiplayer option, in which players can either explore galaxies created by other players or design their own using custom mods.
VoidExpanse is available for $14.99 USD and can be played on PC, Mac, or Linux. To celebrate its release on Steam, it can be purchased for a 10% discount until April 9. The developers add that prices for certain regions will be adjusted as per Steam recommendations, but “we are not planning to raise the price, plus all future updates to VoidExpanse will be free.” Interested astronauts might also like to see what’s new on the game’s Facebookpage before plotting their next course to the stars.
