Age of Grit – Firefly-Inspired Cowboy Steampunk RPG
Age of Grit follows the struggles and adventures of a lone airship owned and controlled by the player.
follows the struggles and adventures of a lone airship owned and controlled by the player. Under development by iqSoup, the game is inspired by and uses many of the mechanics found in traditional space trading games like Drifter or Freelancer . It also seeks to create the unlikely amalgam of steampunk and cowboys, inspired mostly by science fiction smugglers and gritty traders ( Firefly and Star Wars are cited inspirations). Though instead of risking journeys through the emptiness of space, players will steer their airships through a land known only as The West.
Players can choose what jobs they wish to take in order to earn money to maintain and improve their airship, a standard mechanic across many trading games. Age of Grit will, as a result, include many trading missions, though iqSoup promises that there will be a large amount of variety. Some missions will send players to find water for a town that’s drying out, or even go treasure hunting. The game will include a combat system in order to allow players to chase after dangerous bandits, or to start down the path of becoming a prominent bandit in The West.
Age of Grit is currently on Kickstarter and has nearly reached their initial goal of $12,000, with their Sept. 26 deadline fast approaching. There are many promised features still to come for this game, including fleshed-out characters, multiple factions vying for power in The West, and many more depending on what stretch goals are reached. The game is currently being developed for PC, Mac, Linux, and iOS, though other platforms are still being considered.
