Neon Caves Lighting Up Ouya Next Week

Originally created as a backer reward for Indie Statik’s Kickstarter campaign, Neon Caves is now coming to the Ouya system.

is now coming to the Ouya system. The game is similar in both art style and gameplay to fellow endless survival game Geometry Wars , but a few key features help it distinguish itself. For one, its “anchor” mechanic. You control a small craft which is propelled apparently only by its weapons system, meaning you have to fire away from the direction you want to move. While interesting, this would likely get tiresome fairly quickly without the ship’s ability to anchor itself in mid-air, allowing you to fire without moving. The upside is, of course, an easier time shooting enemies, but the downside is that it makes it harder to avoid environmental hazards and enemies who aren’t content to sit still and be shot.

Speaking of enemies, Neon Caves has nine different enemy types, among which are, apparently, “historically accurate giant crustaceans.” (But can you critical hit them for massive damage?) Neon Caves doesn’t just have crabs you can fight. No, these crabs are ancient, monstrous things. They are… giant enemy crabs. Yeah. Bet you thought that joke was dead.

In addition to historically accurate fodder for jokes that haven’t been relevant for about seven years, Neon Caves features four different powerups to keep you from being as dead as that joke: Rapid-fire, bombs, invincibility, and “ghost ship.” I’m not sure quite what that last one does, but I’d guess that it helps you keep from actually becoming a ghost of a ship.

If you have an Ouya and are interested in a challenge, you can pick up Neon Caves for just $2.99 USD on August 14. If you’d just like to learn a bit more about the game and its developer, Force of Habit, you can visit their website.
