Analyze and Discuss – A First Look At ‘Curiosity’ Hits YouTube

, it’s a name that isn’t really recognizable in the area of mobile gaming, not until recently. The mastermind behind PC and console franchises such as Populous , Black and White and Fable left Microsoft and went indie with his own studios of 22 Cans . Curiosity , as we’ve mentioned before, will be the first of the series of games with single-word title. In the game, the entire world would collaborate to dig up a mysterious black cube in order to uncover the secret it holds. The premier trailer for Curiosity hit YouTube, which was rather interesting. Check out our analysis below.
The trailer, as usual, opens with an ESRB notice, followed by the a logo presumably from the game’s developer. Upon zooming to the cube, the central object of the game, the camera reaches a molecular level, which was revealed to be a part of a leaf of grass lying next to a river in a rural countryside area. As far as we can tell, it seems to be somewhere in northern Italy, rather close to the city of Venice. The camera continues zooming out to the solar system, then galaxies within galaxies, forcing the same rhetoric down our throats to perpetuate the “social experiment” that is Curiosity .
The dialogue shifts slightly throughout the trailer, perpetually pelting viewers with signature Molyneux hyperbole to emphasize how awesome the object is .
“So amazing” , “awe inspiring” , “will expand our minds beyond this world” , “make the God particle seem smaller than an atom”, “will be covered by the media for eternity”, “life changing” and counting. It definitely looks and sounds spectacular, and absolutely made us dead curious. By the way, feel free to hit another view of the video upon contemplating on what might be inside the cube.
Have you finished your meditation yet? Are you prepared for the truth? Don’t read on if you aren’t. Are you still reading? Seems you are. Okay, so here’s our spoiler: the trailer is a spoof . Do you believe it? Are you shocked? You probably are, we guess — or not.
In case you missed our clue, the video belongs to petermolydeux with a “D”, the infamous non-authentic Peter Molyneux better known for his Twitteraccount. Petermolydeux has been followed extensively by indie developers, thanks to a bunch of bizarre and unconventional game design ideas, which resulted in a successful game jam and even partially inspired the real Molyneux himself to go indie.
You have to admit though, the trailer was incredibly clever. Even we were convinced of the trailer’s authenticity for a couple of hours before giving the account name a second look. From the theme and style to the content of what was shown, it would make perfect sense if the trailer were real from 22 Cans . It has been successful at both promoting Curiosity , as a trailer should, and making us even more curious of what’s inside the cube. The real Peter Molydeux used pretty much similar dramatic and sensational words to describe it earlier, which made us skeptical. But in any case, Curiosity is definitely something we would be having our eyes on.
So the trailer was technically fake, but what are the odds Molydeux is only projecting what Molyneux himself believes this game will be? Drop a comment below to let us know what you think.
Curiosity is scheduled to be released on August 22nd, 2012 on iOS, Android and PC, so stay tuned to IGM Mobile for future updates.
