Every game relies on certain things to make it both playable and fun.
Every game relies on certain things to make it both playable and fun. For most games, one of these key aspects is vision, since the player needs to be able to see their character running, jumping, flying or otherwise moving about the screen. In Echo – Hear To Play by iPhonedation , however, things are a little different.
In Echo, you play as a spaceship flying through deep space, trying desperately to avoid the enemy cruisers. While this certainly sounds easy, it’s complicated by the fact that you must do so by relying only upon your hearing. Rather than appearing on screen like a normal game, enemies only exist as pulses of sound, which you must navigate blind.
The games controls are exceedingly simple: all you need to do is to listen out for the incoming obstructions and then tilt your phone to steer out of the way. The game is played entirely via the iPhone’s accelerometer and positional audio, so you’re never required to look at the screen. Echo – Hear To Play also fully supports VoiceOver, allowing you to navigate the menus via audio so that even those who are legally blind are able to play.
