Magic Leap and Lucasfilm team up to open mixed reality research lab

The mysterious but exceedingly well-funded Floridian startup Magic Leap has forged a partnership with Lucasfilm that will see the "mixed reality" tech firm opening a joint research lab at Lucasfilm's compound in San Francisco this month.

What's more notable about this partnership, at least for those developers still curious about Magic Leap's capabilities and what sort of experiences might be built for it, is that Lucasfilm and Magic Leap have produced a Star Wars-themed Magic Leap experience together and published the video (embedded above) online.

The two companies are being coy with further details, though they're making it very clear that their partnership is focused on neither games nor movies but "experiential storytelling."

"We built some really crazy moments...one-to-one scale ships and characters, things where you suddenly feel like you’re there. I could be looking at somebody, and there’s also a ship taking off and a droid running around—like you walked onto the set, but it’s all real," Magic Leap founder Rony Abovitz told Wired. "We want to be a medium how to tell stories—and ultimately, maybe the medium."
