IGM Forum Finds: Rogue Invader
Isometric space-shooter Rogue Invader is our latest Forum Find , coming to us from Squishy Games Co.
, coming to us from Squishy Games Co. For twenty years, the Zeno aliens have been traveling across Terran colonies, raining death upon their enemies and leaving behind a vengeful fleet that seeks revenge. After a long and difficult journey to reach the Zeno home world, the fleet is left without any supply ships and very limited resources. Their orders are to not leave until the war is over. This is where things pick up for the player.
Rogue Invader is an HD game with 1-bit color – every gradient is created using only black and white pixels. With that space, Squishy Games has created a randomly-generated alien landscape complete with obstacles, bases, and, of course, Terran and Zeno competitors. With only one gun and only one drop-pod available to players when they first land, they must find weapons in the environment to create loadouts that make future invasions easier; weapon collection and customization is saved throughout each play, even though player death is permanent. The environment, while randomly-generated in level, has landmarks in which persistent damage is apparent; if a player destroys a base in one playthrough, that base is seen being repaired throughout the next few runs. Players must choose whether to beam supplies up to the fleet, or to keep them – these decisions affect future plays, so decisions must be made carefully.
