Ghost Ring Blends 2D Platforming Adventure & Visual Novel

Fresh for 2015, Android gamers get to experience the first game from independent Indonesian developer Rifki Hardiyanto, known in the industry as Keitaro3660.

Ghost Ring: The Labyrinth of Soul (or Soul Labyrinth ) features two-dimensional platforming in an anime-inspired world.

The adventure merges adorable graphics with an immersive story, such as might be found in a visual novel, and adds in the adventuring elements of a platformer. The player takes on the role of Rai, a magical flying fox who possesses powers related to both thunder and dreams. He and his partner, Eva, both possess artifacts called Ghost Rings. Using their unique abilities, the duo must enter the “puzzling mind and negative soul” of a girl named Rinne, and rescue her from her own depression.

Players will get to use a large variety of powers and abilities as they undertake the journey. Rai’s thunder powers enable the use of a range of storm-oriented attacks, which provide “really high and versatile damage.” Upgrading the different powers then increases their area of effect. Future updates hope to include the ability to fly. Although there is no way to die, since the adventure is taking place inside Rinne’s mind rather than in the physical world, there is a time limit which will create an additional challenge for the player. The Google Play leaderboard will allow players to test themselves against others around the world, and the developer promises that the next update will include more achievements, more quests, and a number of mini-games which can be unlocked by collecting… secret watermelons.

Yep, sounds like anime all right.

The developer hopes that Ghost Ring will appeal to anime fans as well as more traditional gamers. He particularly feels that admirers of Touhou Project will find the game relevant to their interests. Ghost Ring was released just days before the new year and developed with the Unity engine. The game is available free to play from Google Playon devices with Android 2.3 or higher. Try it today, and connect with other fans or watch for future updates by visiting the game’s Facebook page.
