Yesterday, Natural Selection 2 developer Unknown Worlds , released a first look at the female space marine character model on the game’s official website.

The addition of the female character comes, as promised, following the success of Natural Selection 2 .  The inclusion of the female character model, one that is both realistic and respectful, comes during a time where games media is scolding blatant sexism, and is taking the steps needed to stomp out the issue from video games. In a Washington Times reportpublished earlier last month, it was revealed that according to the Entertainment Software Association, nearly half of all gamers in the United States are female. With the tasteful addition of the female marine to Natural Selection 2’s roster, it is clear that Unknown Worlds is a step ahead of the industry, in this regard.

“The game industry has a history of depicting female characters inappropriately,” Unknown Worlds said in the announcement post.“Often, they are stylized to such a degree that they become sexual objects: While their male comrades are clothed, armed and armored to fight, the female character is notable for the lack of any clothing at all. When female characters are granted equal protection, that protection often ignores basic laws of physics in favor of offering titillating form…it’s not a trope Unknown Worlds will entertain. Games are legitimate cultural influences, and game developers are responsible for the message they choose to convey to players. The Natural Selection 2 female marine is first and foremost, like her male colleague, a soldier. Her armor puts function before form, while adopting the science fiction, melee combat aligned design ques that have made the male marine so uniquely recognizable.”

Natural Selection 2 players will be able to select from three variations of the female marine. Players who purchased the special edition or deluxe edition will have access to character models which correspond to their selected retail package. Everyone else will have immediate access to the default, green-armor marine.

Unknown Worlds closes the announcement by explaining that the female marine is expected to become available in late August or early September.
