The Butterscotch Jam To Pump Out Five Games In 40 Hours
Today, Butterscotch Shenanigans , the developer of Quadropus Rampage and Towelfight 2 , announced their plans for the first ever Butterscotch Jam .
No, it is not something you put on your toast.
The Butterscotch Jam involves Butterscotch Shenanigans (and anyone else who wishes to participate) going full-speed and producing five game prototypes over the course of five days, —specifically, this coming Monday (the 19th) through Friday (the 23rd). Each day Butterscotch Shenanigans will tweet out the day’s theme from their Twitter account ( @BScotchShenani) and others can follow the jam’s progress using the hashtag #BscotchJam.
The catch is that developers participating can only work on one game, per day, and only spend eight hours on that day’s game. That’s right: five games, in five days, all in 40 hours or less. I stressed out just typing that last sentence.
“One might say that game jams were the birth canal that squeezed [ Butterscotch Shenanigans ] into the world of game development,” Butterscotch Shenanigans developer Seth Coster said in the jam’s announcement post, “crying, screaming, and covered in Butterscotch flavored juices. The game jam environment is amazing because it forces you to keep things in scope. When your time is so limited, you can’t make a big game. So you pare down your design idea to one thing that really matters, and you build your whole game around that one core idea. When we founded Butterscotch, that was the approach we wanted to use with all our games.”
The decision to create the Butterscotch Jam comes after the decision to scrap their space RPG, Captain, when they realized that the game was not going in the direction they wanted it to.
“Development was pretty slow-going,” Coster explained, “and we kept backtracking on our designs and redesigning most major portions of the game over and over. After three weeks of two-steps-forward-three-steps-back development, we’ve decided to scrap Captain and bring things back into our wheelhouse.”
Their wheelhouse being a breakneck game development jam, in the coming week.
While Butterscotch Shenanigans does not believe they will have anything polished enough to release to fans at the end of the game jam, they will be covering the development of each day’s titles at the end of the day. And who knows, considering that Quadropus Rampage and Towelfight 2 were born from game jams (7-day Roguelike Challenge and Global Game Jam 2012, respectively) we might be getting the first glimpse of the next Butterscotch Shenanigans title, sometime in the coming week.
